Come to our retreat home, where the musicians are staying for the week, and enjoy an evening of music with us.
From classical poise to Romantic passion, this programme explores Russian chamber music. Taneyev’s String Trio blends clarity and warmth, Myaskovsky’s Cello Sonata is deeply expressive, and Rimsky-Korsakov’s variations shimmer with colour. It finishes with Tchaikovsky’s Quartet No. 1, a repertoire cornerstone, renowned for its heartfelt, folk-inspired Andante cantabile.
‘When Student Becomes Master’ – Concert Insight
During the 1850s and 60s, the St Petersburg school included the renowned group of composers known as ‘The Five’, who were dedicated to a nationalist Russian music. Rimsky-Korsakov, one of their number, became professor of composition at the conservatoire in St Petersburg, where towards the end of his life he taught Myaskovksy and Prokofiev. In Moscow, the outlook was more cosmopolitan, epitomised by the giant figure of Tchaikovsky, although there was always communication between the two groups of musicians. Taneyev was a brilliant pianist as well as a composer and, after he studied composition with Tchaikovsky in Moscow, the elder composer entrusted him with the premieres of his second Piano Concerto and Piano Trio in A Minor.
