The Winter Festival 2026 continues with a vibrant afternoon concert at the Recital Hall in Haberdashers Monmouth School. A programme glowing with Czech vitality and depth—Smetana’s String Quartet No. 1 bursts with bold invention and freedom, while Dvořák and Suk bring radiant piano writing, heartfelt poetry, and exuberant ensemble interplay.

Our festival this year celebrates the influence of composers as teachers and mentors for the generations that followed them.

‘When Student Becomes Master’ – Concert Insight

The middle years of the nineteenth century saw a rise in musical nationalism across Europe, as countries attempted to loosen the dominance of the Viennese musical establishment. In the 1860s, a young Dvořák was conducted by Smetana, by now a famous name, whilst playing in the Provisional Theatre Orchestra. Smetana went on to conduct several of Dvořák’s early works, and Dvořák played viola in the premiere of Smetana’s first String Quartet. Suk studied with Dvořák in Prague, later marrying his daughter Otilie.
