The Winter Festival 2026 starts off in style at the beautiful Bishop’s Palace in Hereford. Our festival this year celebrates the influence of composers as teachers and mentors for the generations that followed them. This opening concert is a programme of sparkling wit and lyrical beauty—Salieri’s elegant counterpoint, Schubert’s restless intensity, Beethoven’s youthful brilliance, Liszt’s dark lyricism, and the joyful warmth of Schubert’s beloved ‘Trout’ Quintet.
‘When Student Becomes Master’
Salieri is a man to whom history (and Peter Shaffer’s Amadeus) has done much disservice. The last decades of the Eighteenth Century saw him as one of the foremost musical figures in Vienna, particularly in the world of opera. Beethoven came to him for instruction, and a healthy esteem remained; Salieri conducted the first performances of Beethoven’s 1st and 2nd Piano Concertos and Beethoven’s Op. 12 Violin Sonatas are dedicated to the elder composer. Two decades later, Salieri was still in post as Austrian Imperial Kapellmeister, passing on his knowledge to the young Franz Schubert and even younger Franz Liszt.
