Dedicated to Hans von Bülow

Our festival ends with a programme that focuses on the influential pianist and conductor Hans von Bülow, through works dedicated to him by composers writing in hugely varying musical languages. Von Bülow’s association with Brahms is well-known, but it is telling that Gabriel Fauré also dedicated a chamber masterpiece to him – the ravishing and turbulent G minor Piano Quartet. The chamber music of Stanford is enjoying a resurgence, representing a British Romantic tradition that owed a lot to Brahms.
