Schumann Piano Trio in F, Op. 80

Quattuor Artium is a newly-formed piano quartet of young professionals from Estonia, the UK and Poland. All four musicians studied at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London and are now establishing themselves as soloists and chamber musicians in London and Tallinn. This festival marks their first major international collaboration, with further exciting projects soon to follow. In this concert they are performing Arthur Lemba, as cellist, Anna, explains:

“Relatively unknown in the UK, Artur Lemba is one of the leading Estonian composers of the 20th century and a direct contemporary of Frank Bridge, being only five years his junior. Lemba studied at the renowned Saint Petersburg Conservatory alongside Sergei Prokofiev, and his professors included Glazunov and Rimsky-Korsakov. His piano quartet, coincidentally also in the key of c minor, was written in 1938 during the Soviet occupation of Estonia but it seems it only became publicly available in 1942 under the Nazi German occupation. It is late romantic in style and full of lyrical melodies and drama. Surprisingly, although published, the work remains unknown and research has concluded that due to a lack of comments or additions in the score and parts and an absence of any media mention of performances or recordings it may be concluded that it has never been performed. “
